How is an infrared sauna different from a traditional steam sauna?

Heat treatments have been used for thousands of years to help heal and relax the body, from Native American sweatlodges to Turkish baths and Scandinavian saunas. Advances in technology have now given us an Infrared sauna which offers a supremely comfortable environment in which to achieve optimum improvements in health, beauty and general well-being.

Using heat and infrared light to relax and detoxify the body, they offer what is known as ‘parasympathetic’ healing, which means they help the body to control and handle stress. Infrared saunas differ from regular saunas because their light directly penetrates your skin, but does not warm the air around you. The temperature on your body goes up quickly, yet the light has no effect on your surrounding environment, which makes them safe to use anywhere.

The results of an infrared sauna are produced at lower temperatures than a conventional sauna, and therefore will be tolerated better by people who cannot withstand the very high heat of traditional saunas or steam rooms. What does an Infrared therapy session feel like?

Your towel is laid out inside the sauna casing and after changing into your swimsuit, you lie full length on the infrared heating pad. The canopy containing the light-emitting cells is placed over your body, leaving your head out, resting on a pillow. This allows the light to reach all sides of the body.

Almost immediately you begin the feel the delicious warmth throughout your body and all tension draining away. The stresses and strains of everyday life recede into the distance and become meaningless, as you drift away into a weightless state of blissful relaxation.

Time ceases to exist in your warm cocoon, as your deeply relaxed state frees your mind from worry and anxiety. Many clients just drift off to sleep! Those who stay awake move into another realm of consciousness where all is peace and tranquillity, and, when their treatment time is up, cannot believe that any time has passed.

When your session is done, it’s suggested that you take your time and let your body cool down. Once cooled down, feel free to take a shower or bath. Just make sure you are drinking plenty of water.
